Although representatives from 25 political parties and alliances attended the July National Charter signing ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Friday, 24 parties signed the charter.

The Gono Forum did not sign the document, the party general secretary Mizanur Rahman confirmed.

Major political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, attended the event.

No representatives from the National Citizen Party and four left parties — the Communist Party of Bangladesh, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) — were present at the signing ceremony.

The chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, arrived at the venue at 4:30pm, marking the start of the ceremony with a parade participated in by BNCC and Rover Scouts members, along with students from national minority groups.

The event began at 4:30pm, 30 minutes later than the scheduled time.

After the signing ceremony, Gono Forum general secretary told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he refrained from signing the charter as he was not sure about the present status of his party’s protest against the repeal of the schedule 7 of the constitution or the Proclamation of Independence 1971.

‘Later, I saw the print version of the charter and noticed that our demand was addressed. Now our party will decide about signing it,’ Mizanur said.
