Police on Friday said that they had recovered 190 bharis of gold and arrested four people over a recent theft at a jewellery shop at Fortune Shopping Mall in front of Mouchak Market at Malibagh in Dhaka

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner, Md Shafiqul Islam, revealed the information at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre in the morning.

He said that DB police conducted drives in past 72 hours in different districts across the country, including Chattogram, Faridpur and Barishal, and recovered about 190 bharis of gold, 93.5 grams of rupa, Tk 1,77,200 in cash and arrested four people along with a motorcycle, over the theft that took place on October 9.

The arrested are Shahin Matabbar, 46, Nurul Islam, 33, Anita Roy, 31, and Uttam Chandra Sur, 49.

A case was filed with Ramna police station in this connection.

He said that the DB police began shadow investigation on the incident and identified a group that was involved in the theft.

The looters planned for three months before the looting and hid different tools, including hammers, shovels and other things under the tin roof behind the market in advance, he described.

On the day of the incident, accused Suman entered the market and tied a thread with the window. He also left burqas in the bathroom to cover faces during the theft, the police said.

Tying a rope to the previously tied thread, they climbed up, cut the grill and entered the bathroom. Later, they entered the shopping mall by breaking the bathroom door while wearing a burqa. Stealing from Shampa Jewelers, they escaped following the same route, he described.

‘One person involved in the looting is yet to be arrested,’ said the DB chief.

Legal action against the arrested people was on process, he said.
