The Dhaka North City Corporation has initiated a project to build a new link road connecting the 60 Feet Road to the main road of Mirpur to ease the long-standing traffic congestion.
As part of it, illegal structures at the northern side of the 60 Feet Road were demolished on Thursday, said a DNCC press release.
The eviction drive cleared structures built illegally on the land owned by the Housing and Public Works Department in Ward 13.
DNCC administrator Mohammad Azaz, who was present when the drive was conducted, said, ‘For 17 years, no effective initiative was taken to address the traffic congestion on the 60 Feet Road.’
‘We are constructing a new connecting road after removing illegal encroachments to ease public suffering,’ he said.
He hopes to complete the construction and open the road to the public by December 16, before Victory Day.
According to the release, the 60 Feet Road starting from Bangladesh Betar in Agargaon currently ends before meeting the main road running between Mirpur 10 and Mirpur 2.
As a result, vehicles are forced to take a turn through a narrow lane on the right side, where two-way traffic caused chronic congestion throughout the day.
To provide a permanent solution, the north city authorities is now building a new link road on the left side of the existing one, the release mentions.
The new stretch will connect to the main Mirpur Road near the Mirpur 2 post office, allowing vehicles on the 60 Feet Road to enter the main road directly through a one-way lane.
