Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Monday came down heavily on critics of the interim government, saying that the critics ‘are assisting the ousted fascist regime of the Awami League’.
The interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed office on August 8, 2024, three days after the fall of the Awami League regime in a mass uprising.
Referring to a talk show on a television channel, the finance adviser said that a participant was labelling the interim government ‘worthless’.
Noting that such narratives are encouraging the ousted fascist regime of AL,
the finance adviser said that the critics did not give credit to the interim government for stopping the plundering of banks and increasing the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Salehuddin was addressing a discussion on the financial transparency in the corporate sector at the Economic Reporters Forum in the capital Dhaka.
Referring to his correspondence with the bilateral and multilateral lenders, the finance adviser said that the image of the interim government was positive.
On the corporate culture in the country, the finance adviser said that he was recognising the corrupt practices of private companies.
The private companies are smarter than the public entities that allows them to smuggle money abroad using ‘genius tactic’ — changing several places between originating and destination sources.
The finance adviser called upon reporters to avoid economic misinformation and stressed the need for transparency and strong auditing to safeguard the country’s economic interests and bolster public trust.
Finance secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, Financial Reporting Council chairman Md Sajjad Hossain Bhuiyan and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh president NKA Mobin attended the event as guests of honour.
The discussion was presided over by ERF president Doulot Akter Mala, with its general secretary Abul Kashem moderating.
Later, the finance adviser inaugurated the Economic Reporters Forum Institute.
