
The government is planning to construct an additional bridge beside the Jamuna Bridge on the Jamuna River to facilitate speedier communication between the eastern and western regions of the country.
The Bangladesh Bridge Authority on Sunday signed a contract with a consultancy company to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the purpose.
The same contract also covers an initiative to prepare a detailed design and check feasibility for reforming the deck and related work for the accurate use of the Jamuna Bridge’s rail line, according to the release.
The contract signing programme was held at the conference room of the Bridge Authority head office Shetu Bhaban in the capital, said its press release.
As per the release, the bridge authority signed a contract valued at Tk 14,29,85,405.41 with a joint venture of IUT and Devcon (DevConsultants Limited).Â
In signing of the contract bridge authority chief engineer Quazi Muhammad Ferdous represented the government and the counterpart was represented by IUT and Devcon representative Professor Shakil Mohammad Rifaat.
While chairing the programme, Bridges Division secretary and bridge authority executive director Mohammad Abdur Rouf said that the initiative for building the annex bridge had been taken due to the increasing pressure of traffic.
He said that under the contract the existing bridge would be repaired effectively. Â
