
Chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission Professor SMA Faiz at a workshop at the UGC in Dhaka on Sunday called on teachers and students to work together for the welfare of the country, rising above personal interests.
He made the call at the workshop titled Course Development and Stakeholder Participation in Social and Behavioural Change, which was organised under the joint initiative of the UGC and the UNICEF, said a press release.
UGC members Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossen, Professor Masuma Habib and Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam spoke as special guests at the event.
UGC’s international collaboration division director, current responsibilities, Jesmin Pervin and SBC manager of UNICEF Md Badrul Hasan spoke at the event.
Thirty-three teachers with experience in SBC from various public and private universities of the country participated in the workshop.
Mentioning that the young generation of the country is very sincere and talented, Professor SMA Faiz said, ‘After the July uprising, the young generation could not be put to proper use.’
He also said that in many cases, the personal interests of teachers were being given priority over the interests of students.
He gave a set of suggestions in his speech, including making the country’s higher education institutions student-friendly and strengthening student-teacher relations.
Tanzimuddin Khan said that the country’s context needed to be taken into account in formulating the curriculum on SBC.
Noting that the virtual society is having an impact on various aspects of lives, he commented that the issue of using virtual society needed to be included in the SBC curriculum.
Anwar Hossen said that it had been possible to achieve some specific goals under the SBC project.
He also said that opportunities had been created to conduct research on the subject, including the formulation of a research repository on SBC and 12 course curricula.
The formulation of a curriculum on social and behavioural change is very timely, said Masuma Habib, adding, ‘It is necessary for various stakeholders in the society as well as university teachers to have a clear idea about the problems created by SBC and the ways to solve them.’
Ayub Islam said that the inclusion of SBC curriculum in various branches of higher education such as health, environment and education was very important.
