The joint forces on Sunday conducted a raid at the house of former Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim at Chawkbazar in the Old Dhaka area.

The drive began at about 11:00am and continued until about 5:00pm at the house named ‘Gulshan Ara Masud Tower’ on Debidas Ghat Lane.

Lalbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Mostafa Kamal confirmed that a raid was conducted at Haji Salim’s house, but he declined to give further details.

Witnesses, however, said a team comprising police members and army personnel led by an executive magistrate went to the house at about 11:00am and started conducting a search at the underground parking of the building.

During the search, they found six luxurious cars at the underground parking.

Haji Salim and his family members are owners of the six cars, sources said.

During the raid, the joint force members also searched inside the cars and scrutinised the papers related to the cars.

Despite the fact that the team found six cars, they did not seize the cars, as the papers of the cars were found to be legal, said the sources.

However, the reason for the raid was not mentioned by the law enforcement agencies.

Contacted, Lalbagh division deputy commissioner of police Mallik Ahsan Uddin said that he had no details about the raid and that police were deployed to assist the drive as requested.

After the fall of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, amid a mass uprising, Haji Salim was arrested in the Bangshal area of Old Dhaka on September 1 past year.

He was later placed on remand for different terms in various cases for interrogation. He is now in jail.

Haji Salim was first elected as an Awami League lawmaker from the Dhaka-8 constituency in 1996.

He was re-elected as an AL lawmaker in the 2018 national election, but he did not contest the 12th parliamentary elections held in January 2024.

However, Salim’s son, Solaiman Mohammad Selim, was elected from the Dhaka-7 constituency as an AL lawmaker in the 2024 election. He is also now in jail after arrest.
