Speakers at a seminar in Khulna on Saturday stressed that renewable energy was the only sustainable way to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imports.
They urged collective efforts driven by patriotism, particularly from the young generation, to foster domestic production and create employment opportunities.
Organised by the Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh, the seminar was held at Khulna Press Club with energy adviser of CAB Professor M Shamsul Alam as keynote speaker.
Speakers highlighted that about 85 per cent of Bangladesh’s current energy supply was import-dependent.
The country, however, has the potential to generate 3,000 megawatts of electricity from rooftops alone, in addition to wind and hydro power opportunities in coastal areas.
They emphasised that energy was central to the nation’s development, but tackling corruption was equally essential for sustainable progress.
Among others, students of Dhaka University Naushin Jahan Takia, Sabat Mostofa Prathun and Najifa Tajnur; students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Anannya Habib Akash and Samia Akter; and student of Rajshahi University Twasin addressed the event on six individual topics about the renewable energy.
In an open discussion, Khulna Press Club convener Enamul Haque shared his views while CAB Khulna district general secretary M Nazmul Azam David delivered the welcome speech, among others.
