Social welfare and women and children affairs adviser Sharmeen S Murshid at a meeting in Doha in Qatar has emphasised that the care economy plays crucial role in advancing women’s economic empowerment.

She made the remarks while leading the Bangladesh delegation at the South-4-Care Platform meeting on September 15, said a press release on Friday.

‘The care economy not only meets essential social needs but also acts as a powerful engine for job creation,’ she said, adding, ‘A well-developed care sector provides significant opportunities for women through safe and decent employment, thereby enhancing their participation in labour markets both at home and abroad.’

Addressing the international forum that has brought together representatives from 30 member countries, the adviser has reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to advancing the South-4-Care agenda as a cornerstone for inclusive development and gender equality.

She has also highlighted the importance of strengthening international cooperation to boost women’s labour market participation through strategic investment in the care economy.

‘A strengthened care economy directly contributes to building resilient economies,’ she believed, mentioning, ‘By providing proper training and capacity development, particularly among youth, we aim to ensure skill-based employment and promote quality services for all.’

Sharmeen Murshid also noted Bangladesh’s growing leadership role in South Asia, mentioning that they had already initiated programmes to reinforce caregiving systems and services through sustainable policies, inter-ministerial coordination and strong partnerships.
