At least five people were injured in a factional clash between two groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party over supremacy at Rupadah village of sadar in Jhenaidah on Friday.

The identities of the injured could not be known immediately, the police said.

Quoting local people, Jhenaidah police station officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said that there had been a long-standing dispute between Porahati union ward no. 2 BNP president Abu Bakkar Biswas and the former ward president Fazlu Mondal over supremacy in the area.

As a sequel to the dispute, the supporters of the groups locked in an altercation over an electricity pillar damaged in the village.

The two groups, at one stage, swooped on each other with locally made sharp weapons, leaving five of the groups injured, the OC said.

Five houses and a shop were also vandalised during the clash.

Locals later rescued the injured people and took them to Jhenaidah General Hospital for treatment, the police official said.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of unexpected situation, the OC said.

Neither Fazlu Mondal nor Abu Bakkar could be reached over the phone for their comments despite repeated attempts Friday afternoon.
