
The Dhaka Senior Special Judge Court on Thursday placed controversial health sector contractor Motazzaroul Islam Mithu, accused of large-scale corruption in the health sector during the Awami League regime, on a five-day remand in a case filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
On September 10, Anti-Corruption Commission deputy director Md Saiduzzaman filed the case against Mithu with the commission’s Integrated District Office in Dhaka–1 on charges of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 75 crore.
Judge Md Sabbir Foyez on Thursday passed the remand order following a petition submitted by ACC deputy assistant director Zakir Hossain seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation.
On September 11, the Detective Branch of police arrested Mithu in Dhaka’s New Market area and later handed him over to the ACC.
The next day the anti-graft agency produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation.
The court, however, had ordered that he be sent to jail and set September 18 for hearing on the remand petition.
