The value of women鈥檚 unpaid household work is Tk聽5,70,000 crore, said the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday.
The government body has estimated the value of household chores such as cooking and cleaning at Tk聽3,40,000 crore and the value of caregiving services for household members at Tk聽2,30,000 crore.
The data were revealed in the Household Production Satellite Account report released by the BBS at a function at its headquarters at Agargaon in the capital Dhaka.
Using the country鈥檚 economy in 2021, the BBS made the calculation using globally accepted hybrid method.
The BBS also said that if the value of women鈥檚 unpaid labour was included in the gross domestic product, the GDP at current prices in 2021 would have increased by at least 13.57 per cent.
In June, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed while announcing the 2025-26 financial year national budget recognised the women鈥檚 unpaid care work for the first time.
In the budget speech, the finance adviser emphasised the inclusion of the work in the GDP for inclusive economic growth and gender equality.
He said that necessary steps would be taken in future to add their contribution to the GDP based on financial criteria.
Bangladesh Mahila Parisad president Fauzia Moslem welcomed the calculation by the BBS.
But she stressed the need for its inclusion in the GDP for implementation of the finance adviser鈥檚 announcement.
