A 22-year-old youth, accused in a narcotic substance case, drowned after he jumped into a river allegedly while fleeing from members of the Rapid Action Battalion at Kamarkhanda upazila in Sirajganj on Sunday evening.
The deceased was identified as Shawon Reza, son of Nurul Islam Mondol of DD Shahbazpur village.
He was charge-sheeted in a drug case filed with the Kamarkhanda police station on February 14 past year. He is now on bail.
Kamarkhanda police station officer-in-charge Abdul  Latif said that RAB-12 members, accompanied by local people, approached Shawon in the village to recover narcotic substances.
‘As soon as he saw the RAB personnel, he tried to flee and jumped into the nearby Phuljhori River. He went under water. Local people rescued him in an unconscious state. He died on the way to a hospital,’ the police official said.
The body was sent to Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital for autopsy, and an unnatural death case was filed, he added.
Kamarkhanda upazila health and family planning officer Momin Uddin said that the youth had already died before being brought to the hospital.
‘He was declared dead about half an hour later by the duty doctor,’ he said. However, Major Ahsan Habib, deputy director and second-in-command of the RAB-12, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· over phone on Monday morning that there was no official RAB operation at Kamarkhanda on Sunday.
‘Members of our intelligence unit went there to collect information regarding narcotic substances. Seeing them, the youth panicked, jumped into the river and drowned,’ he claimed.
