Students of the Bangladesh Agricultural University decided to postpone their movement following assurances from the university authorities to withdraw the hall evacuation notice and resume academic activities within a week.

The decision came following a five-hour long meeting between the students and the teachers held at the university from Tuesday evening till around midnight.

The university vice-chancellor Professor AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan attended the meeting virtually.

After the meeting, the university’s student affairs adviser Professor Shahidul Haque said that the meeting was positive.

A syndicate meeting will be held today to withdraw the hall evacuation notice and resume academic activities.

AHM Himel, a student representative, said that they postponed the movement for now.

If the authorities fail to meet their demand they would resume the movement.

Earlier they continued their protests for the third consecutive day on Tuesday by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh rail tracks following an attack on them.

They continued protests, demanding an apology from the vice-chancellor, the resignation of the proctorial body and action against outsiders and some teachers for an attack on them on Sunday.

On Sunday, the university authorities shut down the institution for an indefinite period after students had confined over 250 teachers, the vice-chancellor among them, on the campus for about eight hours, demanding a combined degree for the two faculties.

The teachers got free from confinement after someone had unlocked the gate when outsiders allegedly attacked the protesting students triggering a clash with the students.

The students claimed that at least 10 students, including female ones, were injured in the attack.

Defying the university authorities’ order to vacate the halls by Monday, the students continued protests pressing for a six-point demand.
