Students of the Bangladesh Agricultural University continued their protests for the third consecutive day on Tuesday by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh rail tracks following an attack on them.

They continued protests, demanding an apology from the vice-chancellor, the resignation of the proctorial body and action against outsiders and some teachers for an attack on them on Sunday.

Their other demands included the withdrawal of the hall vacating order and  integrating the veterinary science and animal husbandry faculties to confer a single degree.

On Tuesday, the university authorities formed a committee to probe the incident of attack. No case was filed in connection with the incident till Tuesday evening.

On Sunday, the university authorities shut down the institution for an indefinite period after students had confined over 250 teachers, the vice-chancellor among them, on the campus for about eight hours, demanding a combined degree for the two faculties.

The teachers got free from confinement after someone had unlocked the gate when outsiders allegedly attacked the protesting students triggering a clash with the students.

The students claimed that at least 10 students, including female ones, were injured in the attack.

Defying the university authorities’ order to vacate the halls by Monday, the students continued protests pressing for a six-point demand.

For the third consecutive day on Tuesday, the students staged demonstration on the campus and at about 12:00pm they blocked the rail tracks on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route in the Jobabbarer crossing area.

Rail communications on the route was immediately snapped, halting the trains on the route. Passengers on the route suffered.

The students withdraw the blockade from the rail line at about 5:30pm after getting assurance from the university administration of a meeting with them.

Mymensingh railway police station officer-in-charge Md Akhter Hossain said that following the blockade on the route, different trains were stranded and passengers suffered.

In the evening, representatives of the protesting students met some senior teachers of the university. Till filing this report at about 9:00pm, the meeting was going on.

An order, issued on Tuesday and signed by registrar (acting) Arif Jahangir, said that a six-member committee had been formed to probe all the incidents, including confinement of the teachers and different unexpected incidents of vandalism, and identify those responsible.

The committee is headed by fisheries faculty dean professor Rafiqul Islam Sarder and deputy registrar Monjur Hossain is the member secretary.

The committee members were asked to submit report as soon as possible.

BAU public relations and publications director (in charge) Mohammad Toufiqul Islam said that no case was filed in connection with the incident till Tuesday evening.

About the allegations of attack on the students by the outsiders, the university authorities claimed that there were no outsiders rather they were relatives of the teachers and some local people.
