Two people were killed and at least 10 others were injured when a traditional boat race vessel capsized following a collision with a shallow-engine powered boat at Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj on Friday afternoon.

The accident took place near Dahkula Bridge under Lahiri Mohanpur Union, police said.


Ullapara Police Station officer-in-charge Rakibul Islam confirmed the recovery of the two bodies late at night, which were later handed over to their families.

The deceased were identified as Rahich Uddin, 43, and Nurul Islam, 37, both from village Chaksar under Baropangashi Union.

Witnesses said that the race boat named Mayer Doa, carrying rowers from Chaksar Dakshinpara, was returning after a practice session when it collided head-on with the engine-driven boat. The vessel sank immediately, leaving 10 rowers injured and two missing.

Local people rushed to the scene and rescued the injured, who were taken to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex and other nearby hospitals for treatment.

After hours of search, the bodies of the missing people were recovered from the river later at night.
