Indian High Commission through its Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre on Thursday organised an event titled ‘Nazrul Sandhya’ to mark the 49th anniversary of the death of Bangladesh’s national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Indian Cultural Centre, Gulshan in the capital, said a press release.

The musical event featured performances by Chanda Chakraborty and Shahid Kabir Polash.

The director of IGCC, Ann Mary George, delivered a welcome address, and Indian high commissioner Pranay Verma spoke at the event.

‘Nazrul poems stirred a subjugated nation, awakened its soul and inspired an entire country to break free of the chains of colonial oppression,’ said Pranay Verma, adding that Nazrul is an icon of the shared cultural connection between India and Bangladesh.

‘He is an ardent symbol of youthfulness, whose appeal for inclusive, plural humanism transcends national boundaries,’ said Pranay, adding that Nazrul is a philosopher whose message of equality and harmony continues to inspire the world.

The event was a solemn musical tribute to Nazrul Islam—poet, musician, freedom fighter and philosopher. Known as the rebel poet, Nazrul’s writings championed freedom, equality and communal harmony, igniting the spirit of resistance against colonial rule and inspiring generations. His unparalleled contribution to Bengali literature and music remains a source of pride for both Bangladesh and India, symbolising the shared cultural heritage of the two nations, said the release.
