Around 30 people chanting pro-Awami League slogans and holding the party’s flags launched an attack on the office premises of the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York, USA, as information adviser Mahful Alam was entering the building to attend an event on Sunday evening (local time).

Bangladesh interim government in May imposed a ban on all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and like-minded organisations until the completion of ongoing trial proceedings against the party’s leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal.

Mahfuj, who joined the event making the first anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, remained unhurt as he entered the venue from the parking side, according to a official concerned.

The official said that the police were called immediately, and later the attackers, suspected to be AL activists, left the scene after damaging a glass door of the building. ‘We are looking into the incident of attack on our Consulate General’s premises in New York. Legal measures are under way,’ Bangladesh’s deputy chief of mission in Washington, DM Salahuddin Mahmud, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Monday.

He said that adviser Mahfuj Alam was, however, safe and was scheduled to attend another event in Washington on Tuesday.

He said the attackers seemed to be prepared to physically assault the adviser, as they knew about his arrival time.
