Vehicular movement on the Jamuna Bridge lane used by vehicles bound for the northern districts was disrupted for about three hours on Sunday as a truck, a covered van and a milk-carrier vehicle hit each other at dawn, halting the traffic.

After the collision occurring at about 5:15am, vehicular movement on the south lane, used by those bound for the northern districts, remained closed for around one and a half hours after which it was partially opened.

The lane was fully opened for traffic after around three hours.

The accident caused a huge number of vehicles to remain stranded on the lane, causing suffering to the passengers and transport workers alike.

According to the Jamuna Bridge authorities, a truck, a covered van and a milk-laden vehicle hit each other from behind on the south lane near the Pillar Number 23 of the bridge at about 5:15am.

Jamuna Bridge west police officer-in-charge Md Asaduzzaman said that traffic accidents were frequently occurring on the bridge lately due to inclement weather.

The road on the bridge road became slippery in the rain on which driving recklessly became deadly for many vehicles.

‘Reckless driving may have contributed to the Sunday’s accident,’ he added.

Quoting the Jamuna Bridge authorities, Kodda traffic outpost in-charge Md Asad Hasan said that no causalities were reported in the incident.

Bridge authorities later brought a wrecker at the spot and partially opened the lane  after one and a half hours at around 6:30am.

By around 8:00am, the authorities removed all the three damaged vehicles from the lane, fully opening it.

During the rescue and clearing operation, vehicles bound for the northern districts were seen moving slowly between 6:30am and 8:00am, while a 2–3-kilometre-long queue of stranded vehicles was seen, stretching from the bridge to the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

Jamuna Bridge site office executive engineer Ahsanul Kabir Pavel said that the collision damaged the three vehicles that were removed with a wrecker.

He confirmed that vehicular movement on the bridge became fully normal from sometime after 8:00am.
