The International Organisation for Medical Physics awarded Bangladeshi-origin German medical physicist Professor Golam Abu Zakaria with the Harold Johns Medal 2025.

The IOMP awarded people recognising excellence in medical physics across education, research, innovation, and leadership, according to the website of the IOMP.


Zakaria is a professor at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Germany, a member of the German Society of Medical Physics and the founder of the South Asia Centre for Medical Physics and Cancer Research.

The German Society for Medical Physics congratulated him as its long-standing member on being awarded by the International Organisation for Medical Physics.

It said that this prestigious international award recognises his outstanding contribution to medical physics, particularly in research, clinical innovation and education.

Professor Zakaria has been involved in medical physics in Bangladesh since the 1990s.   In Bangladesh, he is the founder of medical physics education.

He recently founded the Alo Bhubon Trust, which raises educational standards in rural areas and offers health services, especially cancer prevention, diagnosis and screening, as well as training for the cancer professionals.
