The nomination paper collection process for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and hall union elections began on Tuesday.

The candidates can collect nomination forms between 10:00am and 4:00pm daily till August 18 while the deadline for submission is August 19 at 3:00pm.

The DUCSU aspirants must collect and submit their forms to the chief returning officer’s office on the third floor of the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building, while the hall union candidates must submit theirs to their respective hall’s returning officer.

Under the DUCSU and hall union elections code of conduct for 2025, rallies or processions are prohibited during the collection or submission of nomination forms, and no more than five supporters may accompany a candidate.

Meanwhile, controversies emerged over allowing former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, Zulias Cizar Talukdar, allegedly involved in an attack on SM Hall student Farid Hasan after the previous elections in 2019, to submit his nomination form for the DUCSU VP post. He submitted his paper to the chief returning officer on Tuesday around 3:00pm.

A total of seven candidates so far collected nomination forms on the first day, chief returning officer Mohammad Zashim Uddin confirmed.

Students alleged that Zulias was involved in various misconducts linked to the banned organisation BCL and are demanding cancellation of his nomination and a bar to his participation in the polls.

Regarding the issue, DU proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that students facing criminal cases or allegations of attacks during the July uprising or under the previous fascist regime would  be excluded from the voter list.

Salimullah Muslim Hall’s returning officer for the hall union elections 2025 and residential teacher Zawad Ibn Farid submitted an application to chief returning officer Prof Mohammad Zashim Uddin to remove the name of Zulias Cizar Talukdar from the DUCSU voter list.

Asked if Chhatra League activists were still on the voter list, DU proctor said that the list was under further review and that any accused members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League would be removed if allegations were found credible.

Chief returning officer Zashim said, ‘We have received complaints. If the allegations are proven to be true, we will take action regardless of who the individual is.’

When contacted over phone regarding the allegations, Zulias said, ‘I was not involved in any such offence. Political rivals are spreading false accusations against me.’

Earlier, Zulias was elected general secretary at Salimullah Muslim Hall in the 2019 DUCSU elections as a candidate of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, now a banned organisation. He had also served as joint general secretary of the hall unit of Salimullah Muslim Hall chhatra league.

The DUCSU elections are scheduled for September 9 and the voting will continue from 8:00am to 3:00pm.

The last DUCSU elections were held on March 11, 2019 after a 28-year-long gap.
