The Ocean Centres Bangladesh, a multi-stakeholder platform to advance safety culture to promote a sustainable blue economy and marine conservation, is scheduled to be launched in Dhaka today.

Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter will be present at the opening of the platform as chief guest, alongside distinguished leaders from port and shipping, fisheries, offshore renewable energy, finance, academia and regulatory bodies, said according to a press release issued on Monday.

The Ocean Centres Bangladesh is to be launched as part of Ocean Centres, an initiative hosted by the UN Global Compact and supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

The initiative includes six more countries in the Global South—Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Each Centre, strategically located to address regional safety challenges, will play a vital role in fostering collaboration between governments, industry leaders and maritime communities.

The initiative will foster locally-led solutions to the challenges that are to be found in each of the regions, said the release.

Building on this, they aim to promote responsible business practices in ocean-based economies and influence the creation of new standards and policies.

English language daily ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, Bangla daily Ajker Patrika and private television channel Nagorik TV are the media partners of the event.

The event will feature an inaugural session with academics and experts, said the release.
