
At least eight people were killed and 16 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts on Thursday.
Three people were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle at Dhanbari in Tangail on Thursday morning, reports our correspondent.
Police said the accident occurred at around 5:30am in the Bilaspur Battala area of the Tangail-Jamalpur regional highway.
The deceased are motorcycle rider Md Al-Amin, 30, son of Zinnat Ali of 5 No Chor of Melandaha in Jamalpur, Swapan Mia, 35 son of Mohammed Aminul Haque of Chor Palisha under the same upazila and pickup driver Mohammed Jewel, 32, son of Nur Islam of the Sadar upazila of Jamalpur.
The two motorcycle riders died on the spot. The injured pickup driver died after being taken to the Dhanbari Upazila Health Complex.
Seriously injured motorcycle rider Md Sani has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Dhanbari Police Station officer-in-charge SM Shahidullah.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that a three-month old baby was killed and 15 others were injured when a passenger bus fell into a pond in Khailkura area under Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur.
The accident occurred around 4:00pm on the Sherpur-Jhenaigati road when a bus fell into the roadside pond as its driver lost control over the steering, said Md Al Amin, officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station.
The injured were sent to Jhenaigati Upazila Health Complex.
Jhenaigati Fire Service Station officer Abdul Mannan said, the body of a child has been recovered from the pond.
In Rajbari, an elderly man was killed when a private car hit his motorcycle near Bangladesh Haat under Pangsha.
The deceased was identified as Ferdous Ali, 60, son of Abdul Gani Mollah, and a resident of Agargaon Taltoli Government Colony under Mohammadpur Police Station in Dhaka.
The accident occurred around 1:30 am when a private car hit a motorcycle from behind, leaving its rider Ferdous critically injured, said Salauddin, officer-in-charge of Pangsha Police Station.
Locals rescued him and took him to Pangsha Upazila Health Complex where he died.
OC Salauddin said Ferdous was on his way to Kushtia from Dhaka on a motorcycle when the accident took place.
A youth was killed in a road accident in Noapara area under Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.
The deceased was Mozammel Haque, 18, son of Mohibul Islam of the village.
The accident took place around 8:30am on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway when a bus ran over the youth while he was crossing the road, said Shuvo Ranjan Chakma, officer-in-charge of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station.
Seriously injured Mozammel was taken to Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
BSS also reported that the driver of a covered van and his assistant were killed in a road accident at the Barodorga overpass point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Rangpur.
‘The accident occurred at noon when a covered van heading from Gazipur to Rangpur hit a heavy vehicle used for highway construction work there,’ said Barodorga Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Md Omar Faruk.
The front part of the covered van was twisted while the driver and his assistant died on the spot.
The driver was Bayezid Ahmed, 20, son of Israfil Sheikh of Ulusara village in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district, and his assistant was Mushfiqur Rahman, 22, son of Sohel Bepari of Paiksha village in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka district.
‘The damaged covered van is in police custody. A case has been filed with Pirganj Police Station in Rangpur,’ the OC of Barodorga Highway Police Station added.
