
The police on Thursday recovered Tk 2.9 lakh from the flat of expelled Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad leader Abdur Razzaque Bin Solaiman Riyad, who is now in police custody in an extortion case.
Confirming the matter, Gulshan police officer-in-charge Md Hafizur Rahman said that they recovered the money from Riyad’s flat in Badda area in Dhaka city about which they came to know during the ongoing investigation.
‘A team of Gulshan police conducted the operation in the flat and recovered Tk 2.9 lakh from there on Thursday morning,’ he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police revealed that they seized four cheques worth around Tk 2.25 crore from Riyad’s Nakhalpara home.
On July 26, the police arrested five individuals, including Riyad, after they caught them red-handed while they were collecting extortion money at the house of Shammi Ahmed, the international affairs secretary of Awami League.
The victim, Siddique Abu Zafar, filed a case with the Gulshan police early Sunday, accusing six identified and 10 or 12 unidentified people.
Riyad and three other accused in the case have been remanded in police custody and are now facing interrogation.
The three others undergoing police interrogation now are Students Against Discrimination’s Dhaka north city convener Md Ibrahim Hossain Munna, 24, and members Md Sadkaun Siam, 22, and Sadman Sadab, 21.
The Students Against Discrimination spearheaded the 2024 July uprising that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
Following the arrest, the Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad expelled Riyad and the Students Against Discrimination expelled Munna, Siam and Sadman Sadab.
According to the case statement, Riyad and absconding accused Kazi Gaurab Apu asked Siddique Abu Zafar to pay Tk 50 lakh in extortion and collected Tk 10 lakh of the amount earlier.
