A technician was killed and another was critically injured as a wheel of a boarding bridge blasted at Sylhet Osmani International Airport about Thursday noon.
The deceased, Rumman Ahmed, 22, was a resident of Tilapara under the Biman Bandar police in Sylhet city, and the injured technician, Enamul, 25, is a resident of Mohaldig village under the same police, the airport authorities said.
Sylhet Osmani International Airport director Hafiz Ahmed confirmed Rumman Ahmed’s death.
He said that a team of some six technicians were replacing the wheels of a boarding bridge about noon as part of the routine maintenance work.
‘One of the wheels suddenly exploded which might be caused by mishandling when the technicians were removing the wheel from its slot, leaving the two technicians seriously injured,’ the airport director said.
He said that the injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident.
‘The attending doctors of the hospital rushed Rumman to the intensive care unit where he died at around 3:30pm,’ Hafiz Ahmed said in the afternoon.
He said that another technician, who also was seriously injured, was undergoing treatment at the hospital.Â
