A Rangpur court on Thursday afternoon placed five people on two-day remand in connection with attacks on the homes of Hindu families in the district’s Gangachara upazila on July 26 and July 27.
The senior Judicial magistrate [Gangachara Cognizance court], Krishnakamal Roy, granted the remand after Gangachara police officer-in-charge Al Emran produced the accused before the court with a five-day remand plea.
OC Al Emran, also the investigative officer of the case, confirmed the matter.Â
The five accused were Yasin Ali, 25, Swadhin Miah, 28, Ashraful Islam, 28, Atikur Rahman Khan, 30 and Saddam Hossain Selim, 22 — all residents of magura village in the neighbouring Kishoreganj upazila under Nilphamari district who were arrested in a joint drive in a case filed on Tuesday over the attack.
Rabindranath Roy, 55, resident of the village, filed the case with the Gangachara model police against 1,000–1,200 unidentified individuals.
At least 12 houses of Hindu community were attacked, vandalised and looted following a Facebook post allegedly defaming the Prophet Muhammad given by a 17-year-old Ranjan Roy, a resident of the village on Saturday noon.Â
The post went viral on social media by Saturday afternoon, sparking outrage across Aldadpur Chhayani village in Gangachara upazila, and nearby Kishoreganj upazila.
Later, the police arrested Ranjan, a student of Private Polytechnic Institute in Rangpur, on Saturday in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act and sent him to a juvenile correction centre through a court order the next day.
Meanwhile, a team of Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad visited the village, spoke to the victims, and demanded punishment for the attackers.
