
A workshop titled Developing Immediate Action Plan to Prevent Dengue Outbreak in Bangladesh was held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The seminar was organised under the joint funding of the Improvement of Urban Public Health Preventive Services Project implemented by the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank under the local government department , said a press release.
Presided over by Abul Khair Mohammad Hafizullah Khan, joint secretary and project director of the local government department, Md Rezaul Maksud Jahedi, secretary, local government department, was present as chief guest at the workshop.
Representatives of city corporations and municipalities, officials of relevant departments and organisations under the local government department, officials of the Directorate General of Health and the PMU of the project, consultants, representatives of The World Bank, ICDDR,B, IEDCR, NIPSOM, WHO, UNICEF and eminent scientists, researchers and academicians from various universities and research institutions participated in the workshop.
Iffat Mahmud, senior operations officer, World Bank Dhaka Office and Task Team leader of IUPHPSP was present as the special guest at the workshop.
Recently, the continuous increase in the incidence of dengue in Bangladesh has emerged as a major challenge for public health.
In this context, this day-long workshop was organised to formulate a realistic action plan under the initiative of the project to take coordinated initiatives to deal with the dengue situation, taking into account the real situation on the ground.
In the workshop, the project director presented a brief speech on the project activities and in the second phase of the workshop, the participants were divided into four groups and formulated recommendations to deal with the dengue situation based on group discussions on specific issues.
In particular, all the participants emphasised the importance of ensuring coordinated efforts of all stakeholders and public participation at the grassroots level to control the dengue outbreak.
At the end of the workshop, the project officially launched the distribution of fogging machines and personal protection equipment for emergency aedes mosquito control in the three city corporations and two municipal areas under the project.
