Bangladesh Army was compelled to use force at one point in self-defence in Gopalganj town on Wednesday as attackers hurled a huge number of crude bombs and brick chips towards them, said a press release of the Inter Services Public Relation Directorate issued on Thursday.
Before using force, the army tried to dissuade the attackers by making announcements several times using sound systems, added the statement.
The ISPR, however, did not mention what kind of force the army used in Wednesday’s clash over the National Citizen Party rally that left four people dead and over 50 others injured in a series of clashes between the members of the security forces and the activists of the Awami League in Gopalganj town.
‘The Army, Border Guard Bangladesh and the police jointly dispersed the agitators. Sheltered individuals at the Gopalganj district Superintendent of Police were shifted to Khulna with the help of the Bangladesh Army,’ said the ISPR release.
The ISPR said that the army, BGB, police, Rapid Action Battalion and other organisations of the administration were enforcing curfew to keep the district’s overall security situation normal.
The ISPR said that agitating people vandalised and set fire to different government establishments and vehicles.
The ISPR also said that agitators attacked the political party’s ongoing rally and vandalised the district jail.
Bangladesh Army urged people to remain patient and not panic over rumours and requested to help law enforcement agencies.
