Bangladesh interim government on Wednesday imposed curfew in Gopalganj till Thursday evening as violent clash erupted between law enforcers and Awami League activists centering on the National Citizen Party rally marking the first anniversary of the July uprising in the district.

‘The curfew has been imposed in Gopalganj from 8:00pm on Wednesday to 6:00pm on Thursday,’ said chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam in a Facebook post.

Terming the attack on National Citizen Party as heinous, the interim government in a statement on Wednesday said that the attack was allegedly carried out by members of the Awami League’s banned student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League and AL activists — will not go unpunished.

‘The perpetrators must be swiftly identified and held fully accountable. There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh,’ according to a statement issued by the chief adviser’s press wing.

A violent clash erupted between law enforcers and Awami League activists after the motorcade of the National Citizen Party was attacked near Chowrangi Mor following their brief rally on Wednesday afternoon.

‘We commend the Army and police for their prompt intervention, and we applaud the resilience and courage of the students and people who carried on with their rally despite these malicious threats,’ the CA press wing statement said.

The statement said that those responsible for this brutality would face justice.

‘Let it be made absolutely clear — violence has no place in our nation. Justice must and will prevail,’ it added.

The CA office said that the use of violence in Gopalganj was utterly indefensible.

The statement further mentioned that preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement was a shameful violation of their fundamental rights.

‘Members of the National Citizen Party, police and media were subjected to the brutal attacks, with their cars vandalised and individuals violently assaulted,’ it added.

Awami League government was ousted through a student-led mass uprising on August 5 last year and Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took over the office three days later.
