At least seven people were severely injured, with about 50 slightly injured and rail communications between Dhaka and Khulna were disrupted for at least by over an hour when a train hit a truck stuck on tracks in Khulna on Monday night.

Khulna railway station officer-in-charge Ferdous Alam said that the incident took place between 8:15pm and 8:30pm.

The train was the Mohananda Express on the Chapainawabganj-Khulna route, he added.

Masud Parvez, Khanjahan Ali fire station warehouse inspector, said that a truck got stuck on the track at the Afil gate area.

The level crossing was legal, and it had a gateman, he mentioned.

When the train was approaching signal was given, but it could not stop instantly, he said and added that then it dragged the truck.

Quoting locals, Masud continued that then the truck hit the two compartments of the train, injuring many inside the train.

‘Seven people were severely injured and we sent them to the Khulna Medical College Hospital,’ he said, adding, ‘around 50 more were injured who took primary treatment, we heard.’
