A case was filed with Daulatpur police station on Saturday against unidentified assailants over Friday’s murder of Mahbubur Rahman Molla, an expelled leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal in Khulna.

The victim’s father Abdul Karim Molla filed the case mentioning that his son was killed over a previous enmity.

The police said on Saturday evening that they had yet to arrest any of the assailants.

They, however, claimed that they could identify the group that killed the former Juba Dal leader.

Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge Mir Atahar Ali said that the police collected the CCTV footage of the area and were using modern technology to identify the killers.

Claiming that the police have already identified two or three members of the assailants’ group, he said that three teams of Khulna Metropolitan Police were conducting drives to nab the killers.

On Friday afternoon, a group of unidentified assailants shot and hacked Mahbubur Rahman near his house in the Mahasharpasha pashchimpara area under Daulatpur police station in Khulna city.

Mahbubur is a former vice-president of the Daulatpur thana unit of Juba Dal.

Mahbub came to public attention on February 18 this year during a clash between students and political activists at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, when a photo of him brandishing a machete went viral.

He was expelled from the party later that night but continued participating in political activities.
