A Dhaka court on Saturday placed another suspect on a five-day remand over the brutal killing of scrap trader Lal Chand Sohag near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias issued the remand order after Kotwali police inspector, also the case investigation officer, Nasir Uddin had sought a seven-day remand.


The accused, Md Titon Gazi was not represented by any lawyer during the hearing. Upon judge’s query, Titon said, ‘In the video, I am seen standing wearing a pastel-colored shirt. Besides, you will not find me giving orders to anyone or doing anything. I was just standing there. I was not involved in the incident.’

Titon was arrested during a drive in the area under the Kotwali police at about 1:00am on Saturday, said a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

With this, total five suspects, all accused in the case, have been arrested so far.

Earlier, the police arrested Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, expelled member of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Tarek Rahman Robin, while the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Alamgir and Monir.

DMP deputy commissioner for media and public relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the primary investigation found that the murder occurred over business related conflict.

‘We are thoroughly investigating the incident. So far, we have not found any political motive behind the incident,’ he said.

Meanwhile, another accused Tarique Rahman Robin on Saturday gave a confessional statement in the court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias recorded his statement and later ordered to send him to jail.

Robin has also been accused in a separate arms case filed by the police in connection with the incident.

On Wednesday, Sohag, also an activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s youth wing Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, was hit and hacked to death with concrete boulders near Gate 3 of Mitford Hospital.

A video of the killing presently spread across the social media, sparking nationwide outrage.

Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with the Kotwali police with the police filing a separate case under the Arms Act.

In the wake of the killing, the BNP expelled five members of its affiliated organisations Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal for their alleged involvement in the incident.

All of them are named in the case, while one of them was placed on police remand for questioning.
