Leaders of eight Islamic parties, including the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the Islami Andolan Bangladesh, on Monday urged the government to ensure a level playing field for all political parties before the next general election.

They also demanded to hold a referendum by November on the implementation of the July National Charter and hold the next election in a proportional representation system.


The leaders of the parties made the demand at separate rallies in Dhaka.

Dhaka north city unit of Jamaat held a rally in front of the Cholera Hospital in Mahakhali, where its nayeb-e-amir Mujibur Rahman said that people would not accept any farcical election and they wanted to apply their voting rights in favour of their preferred candidates.

So, the interim government must ensure a level playing field for all political parties before the election, Mujibur said.

Chaired by Dhaka north city Jamaat amir Mohammad Selim Uddin, its central leaders, Yasin Arafat and Fakhruddin Manik, among others, also spoke.

The rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads.

Islami Andolan Bangladesh also held a rally in front of the east gate of Baitul Mokkaram National Mosque, where its secretary general Yunus Ahmad demanded holding a referendum before the national election on the issue of holding the election under a proportional representation system.

Chaired by the party鈥簊 central leader Sheikh Fazle Bari Masud, the rally was addressed, among others, by its central leaders Emtiaz Alam and Ahmed Abdul Quayyum.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

Dhaka south city unit of Jamaat also held a rally in front of the north gate of Baitul Mokkaram National Mosque to press their five-point demands.

The demands include ensuring a level playing聽 field for all political parties before the next general election, making the trials of the fascists visible,聽 and banning the Jatiya Party and the parties of the Awami League-led alliance.

The Khelfat Majlish party, the Nezame Islam Party, and the Jaatiya Ganatantrik Party also held separate rallies in front of the National Press Club on the day.
