Four people have been arrested at three places in Dhaka on Friday and Thursday over Wednesday’s killing of a scrap trader near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.

Two of them were arrested by the police and the remaining two were arrested by the members of the Rapid Action Battalion.

The law enforcement agencies arrested them amid protests in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country as the video clipping of murdering the trader, Lal Chand, went viral on social media.

The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, expelled its former climate affairs assistant secretary Rajjab Ali Pintu and Dhaka south city unit joint convener Sabah Karim Laki for their alleged involvement in the murder.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner (media) Talebur Rahman in a press release on Friday said that the police on Thursday arrested Mahamudul Hasan Mohin and Tarek Rahman Robin, both named in the case of killing Lal Chand, at separate places in the capital.

The members of the RAB arrested Alomgir and Monir, both named in the case of killing Lal Chand, from the Kadamtali area Friday afternoon, chief adviser’s deputy press secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder wrote on his Facebook profile.

Meanwhile, a metropolitan magistrate court on Friday allowed the police to take Mahamudul Hasan Mohin in their custody for five days and Tarek Rahman Robin for two days for interrogation in the case.

A group of assailants indiscriminately hit Lal Chand with stones and hacked him to death on Wednesday.

Lal Chand’s elder sister filed a case with Kotwali police station over the murder of her brother.

It was learned initially that the incident took place due to a business dispute and previous enmity, according to the DMP press release.

It said that the police collected CCTV footage from the area and conducted drives to arrest the assailants.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki and executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel in a joint statement strongly condemned the murder.

Demanding immediate arrest of all involved persons in the murder, the leaders said that the politics of brutality could not continue.

A group of students of Dhaka University and the Students’ Federation of Bangladesh separately staged demonstrations on the university campus Friday evening protesting at the murder.

Speakers at the protest rallies alleged that leaders and activists of Juba Dal killed Lal Chand by crushing him with stones demanding extortion.

A group of students of Rajshahi University staged a demonstration on the university campus on Friday to protest at the murder, a report received from Rajshahi said.
