
Two students from Feni Polytechnic Institute drowned after being swept away by a strong stream while hiking along a hill trail in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram.
Their bodies were recovered nearly 24 hours later on Wednesday (July 9) afternoon.
Three other hikers, who had lost their way and spent the night in the jungle, were rescued and admitted to the hospital with injuries.
The incident occurred at the Melkhum trail in the South Sonapahar area under Jorarganj union in Mirsarai upazila.
A team from the Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered the bodies around noon.
The deceased were identified as Aminul Islam, 20, from Napiter Char village in Satkania upazila of Chattogram, and Ibrahim Hridoy, 22, from Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.
The rescued individuals Mohammad Sayem, Raihan, and Miraj were admitted to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
According to fire service officials, the group of five set out from Feni for a day trip to the Mirsarai hill region around 11:00am on Tuesday (July 8).
Despite continuous rainfall, they began hiking the Melkhum trail in the afternoon.
At one point, Aminul and Ibrahim were swept away by the strong current.
Their friends failed to locate them, and, as night fell, the remaining three lost their way in the forest and spent the night there.
On Wednesday morning, other friends of the missing group informed the local fire service and police about the incident.
Senior station officer Zainal Abedin Titas of Baraiyarhat Fire Station said, ‘After receiving the report of five missing tourists in the Sonapahar area, we launched a search operation. The bodies of Galib and Hridoy were recovered from the site, while three others were sent to the hospital.’
Jorarganj police station officer-in-charge Md Abdul Halim said, ‘At around 11:30am, the fire service team located the three injured hikers. Based on their information, the bodies of the two others were found later.’
Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex emergency department physician Dr Raju Singh said, ‘Three individuals Miraj, Raihan, and Sayem were brought in with injuries and provided primary treatment.’
Earlier, a student of Chittagong University died by drowning in the sea near the Himchhari Beach in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday morning.
The body of Asif Ahmed, another Chittagong University student who, along with two fellows, went missing in the rough sea in Cox’s Bazar, was recovered on Wednesday morning.
With Asif’s body, two bodies have been recovered, while their classmate Aritra Hasan still remained missing in over 36 hours after they had gone missing at Tuesday dawn near Himchhari beach.
