
Around 25 people, who were injured in the July–August uprising that led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in the past year, vandalised the office of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation in Dhaka on Tuesday after not receiving financial assistance.
The foundation’s chief executive officer Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Kamal Akbar told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· the incident occured at about 7:30 pm.
They broke a water filter and the glass of several doors.
He said that the injured, most of whom are still undergoing treatment at several city hospitals, were supposed to receive financial assistance in the second phase on the day.
‘But we couldn’t provide the assistance today… We’re facing a fund shortages,’ he said.
‘Many of these injured individuals are still suffering from mental trauma. There is a context behind their anger and the vandalism. We have no complaints against them,’ he added.
After the vandalism, the CEO held a meeting with the injured and assured them of solving the issue.
The foundation was established with an initial amount of Tk 100 crore from chief adviser Muhammad Yunus’s relief and welfare fund in September in the past year.
