Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the sooner the election was held, the better it would be for Bangladesh.
‘BNP is the biggest political force which fought for democracy. It is BNP which brought multi-party democracy and parliamentary democracy in the country,’ he told reporters at National Institute of Neuro Sciences and Hospital in Dhaka, Agargaon.
Earlier, he visited BNP chairperson’s advisers Professor Abdul Quddus and Professor Siraj Uddin Ahmed at the hospital.
He enquired about the health conditions of the two BNP leaders from the doctors concerned.
Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘We all have to protect our country together. It is the responsibility of every political party to put the country on the right track.’
He said the political party leaders who think that the election is not necessary at the present situation, they should reconsider the situation.
‘Elections are necessary for the countrymen. An elected government is needed that will have a relationship with the people. That is why we are participating in the reforms process. We have raised the demand for every reform. So, there is no conflict between reforms and elections. The reforms and polls can go together,’ he added.
The BNP secretary general said the party was the biggest victim of the fascist era. ‘You know very well that our party BNP was the biggest victim of torture, murder, disappearance and murder during the Awami League’s fascist government. I had to face imprisonment for 13 times and there were 112 cases against me,’ he added.
He said, ‘We always think that all political parties that support fascism, those who work for fascism, especially the Awami League, need to be punished. They should be brought under the justice.’
Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘I think Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina is the responsible for the killing of the thousands of people. Her trial has begun. We are hopeful that everyone who was involved in the genocide and this fascist attack will be tried.’
