An 80-year-old man was killed and his wife was critically injured in a suspected robbery at their residence in the capital’s Jatrabari area on early Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Khan Villa, a four-storey building in Bibir Bagicha’s Ityadi Goli area near Gate-1.
The deceased was identified as Ismail Khan, 80, while his wife, Saleha Begum, 75, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Sub-inspector Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station said that a team visited the house after receiving information, but found no one there. ‘We later went to the hospital and spoke to their relatives. Further details will be known upon investigation,’ he said.
According to preliminary findings, four suspected robbers broke into the couple’s first-floor apartment by cutting through the window grill.
The SI said they physically assaulted the elderly couple and looted valuables. ‘But the exact amount of the stolen items is yet to be determined,’ he said.
Their daughter, Salma, who lives in Rayerbagh of Kadamtali, rushed to the scene with local people after learning about the incident. The couple was taken to DMCH, where doctors declared Ismail dead around 6:30am.
Locals suspect that the assailants may have suffocated Ismail with a pillow during the robbery, leaving his wife critically wounded.
Family members said that they were unable to immediately confirm what was stolen and would assess the losses after visiting the house.
