A student of Chittagong University died by drowning in the sea near the Himchhari Beach in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday morning. Two other students went missing.

The deceased was Sadman Rahman Sabbab, a student of development studies at the university for the academic year 2023-24, is the son of KM Anisur Rahman of Pallabi at Mirpur in Dhaka. He was aged 21.


The other two students of the same department Asif Ahmed and Aritra Hasan went missing, the tourist police in Cox’s Bazar said. They both were residents of Bogura district headquarters.

 Asif Ahmed is the son of Rafiqul Islam and Aritra Hasan is the son of Aminul Islam, also known Sakib Hasan, a senior sub-editor at ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Additional deputy inspector general of the tourist police Apel Mahmud said that five students went to a remote sea area near Himchhari about 6:00am on Tuesday.

‘We have recovered the body of Sadman Ahmed Sabbab with the help of local people and police officials about 7:00am,’ he said. They were trying to rescue the missing students.

Mohammad Salahuddin, deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, said that tourist police, Coast Guard, and Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel were trying to rescue the two.

‘We have deployed an executive magistrate at the spot. Rescue teams are facing challenges because of rough sea,’ he said.

The university proctor Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif said that they had been in touch with the district administration in Cox’s Bazar since 9:00am.

‘We have sent a four-member team of teachers to Cox’s Bazar,’ the proctor added.
