
The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested a bus driver who had been on the run since a crash that resulted in the deaths of 11 passengers, including children.
On Apr 2, a microbus headed to Cox’s Bazar crashed into a bus headed in the opposite direction on the highway at Lohagara that left 10 passengers killed on the spot while another passenger died in hospital.
Sohel, the bus driver, fled immediately after the crash.
RAB-7 senior assistant director for media ARM Muzaffar Hossain said that he was arrested in a raid conducted in the Ansar Camp area of Mirpur in Dhaka on Sunday night.
During the interrogation, the accused confessed his involvement in the accident. ‘He has been handed over to the police for further legal proceeding,’ RAB said.
RAB reported that on April 1, Md Rafiqul Islam, along with 11 relatives and neighbors, had set off in a micro-bus from Mirpur, Dhaka, to travel to Cox’s Bazar.
The next day, around 7:20am, as they reached the Chunati area of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway at Lohagara, a speeding bus from Relax Paribahan collided head-on with their microbus, causing it to overturn.
Following the incident, on April 3, the brother-in-law of the deceased Rafiqul, Md Rabiul Hasan Sujan, filed a case against the bus driver with Lohagara police station.
