Members of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested four people at Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet on Tuesday night after recovering 479 bottles of foreign made wine in their possession.

The arrested are Md Anwar Hossain, 35, son of Kalon Miah of Dakshin Pratappur village at the Gowainghat upazila, Md Azad Miah, 16, son of Md Idris Ali of the same village, Shamsul Islam, 35, son of late Mayeen Uddin of Jaflong Basti village, and Md Zakir Hossain, 21, son of Md Nurul Haque of Manaikandi village at the same upazila, the RAB said.


RAB-9 media officer KM Shahidul Islam Sohag confirmed the arrests to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that acting on a tip-off, a team of the battalion conducted a drive at Jaflong-Gowainghat road along Jaflong Tea Garden at the Gowainghat upazila at around 10:00pm on Tuesday and arrested the four people while they were trying to flee the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers after leaving a motorcycle and three plastic bags containing Indian wine.

‘Later, 479 bottles of wine were recovered from inside the bags,’ the RAB officer said, adding that the arrested along with the motorcycle and seized wine were handed over to Gowainghat police station after filing a case under the Narcotics Control Act.

Gowainghat police officer-in-charge Sarker Tofayel Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday afternoon that preparations were under way to produce the arrested before a court.
