
Team Group managing director Abdullah Hil Rakib and senior pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Captain Md Saifuzzaman died after the canoe they were on flipped over in Sturgeon Lake in Canada’s Ontario on Sunday afternoon (local time).
On Monday, additional managing director of Denim Expert Ltd and former director of the BGMEA Mohiuddin Rubel confirmed the death of Rakib, also former senior vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
Confirming Saifuzzaman’s death Biman issued a statement on Monday that said the senior pilot was assigned to its Boeing 787 fleet.
A report by Canadian outlet CTV News reported that the incident occurred on Sturgeon Lake in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, about 155 kilometres northeast of Toronto.
Emergency responders were called to the area shortly after 3:00pm following reports of a canoe carrying three men had capsized.
In a news release, the Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police said that one of them managed to swim to shore, but the two others were ‘unable to remain afloat and succumbed to their injuries.’
Authorities said that there were no life jackets in the boat, the CTV news reported.
The Ontario Provincial Police, including its marine unit and aviation team, along with others concerned were involved in the lifesaving and recovery efforts.
