Two people on suspicion of being drug peddlers and muggers were beaten to death by an angry mob in the capital’s Darussalam area on Saturday.
The single name of one of the victims has been identified as Tanvir but the police could not identify the other victim.
The incident occurred in the Ahmednagar area under Darussalam police station sometime after 12:00 noon, when an angry mob launched a fatal assault, killing them on the spot, said the police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s additional deputy commissioner for Darussalam zone, Saleh Mohammod Zakaria, said that the police, responding to a complaint filed by the local people, launched an anti-drug drive in the area Friday night.
During the drive, the police arrested two people and seized 5 kilograms of hemp from them, he said and added that the police filed a case against four people including Tanvir, who was killed in Saturday’s mob beating.
‘Following the drive, Tanvir and another went to the area on Saturday to create fear among local people. The locals became angry, caught the duo, and began beating them. The duo died on the spot,’ Zakaria said.
He said that no case was lodged and none was arrested in this connection until Saturday evening.
