
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday said that eight more suspects were arrested in a case filed over the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo on May 13.
With this, a total of 11 individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder.
DMP commissioner SM Sazzat Ali revealed the information at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
He said that two of the eight arrested gave confessional statements before the court.
The arrested are Md Rabbi, also known as Kabutar Rabbi, 25, Mehedi Hasan, 25, Nahid Hasan Papel, 21, Md Ripon, 20, Md Sohag, 33, Md Robin, 18, Md Hridoy Islam, 24 and Sujan Sarkar, 27.
DMP commissioner Sazzat Ali said that multiple teams of Detective Branch arrested the eight people in a series of raids in different places in Cox’s Bazar, Munshiganj and Dhaka city in the past few days.
‘The arrested have already been produced before the court while confessional statements of two of them have been recorded before the court,’ said Sazzat Ali.
Two switchgear knives used in the incident were seized from the arrested, added the DMP commissioner.
According to the police, Shammo was killed by a group of drug dealers in Suhrawardy Udyan area.
They, however, did not clarify relations between Shammo and the drug dealers.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Jewel Rana recorded the statement of the accused, Nahid Hasan Papel, under Section 164 as police produced him before the court on Tuesday, Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha reported.
Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sanaullah’s court, meanwhile, placed two other accused, Rabbi and Mehedi Hasan, on five-day remand each in the case.
Shahriar, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and also a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal university unit, died in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in an attack by miscreants at about 11:45pm on May 13, police said.
An altercation reportedly broke out between Shammo, his friends and 10 or 12 unidentified miscreants following a collision with a motorcycle of the latter.
The dispute escalated into a scuffle, during which Shahriar was stabbed in the right thigh with the switchgear.
Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead.
