The Bangladesh Prison Directorate has recently signed a contract with a consortium led by Mover Solar and Renewable Energy Ltd to implement solar energy systems across the country’s prisons, beginning with Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj as a pilot project.
According to a press release issued by the directorate on Thursday, solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of prison facilities under the OPEX (Operating Expenditure) model.
The generated solar power will first meet the electricity needs of the jails, with any surplus energy fed into the national grid through a net metering system.
The jail authorities said that the initiative marked the Prison Directorate’s first step into renewable energy production.
The project will be expanded to other prisons across the country in phases.
The government or the prison authorities will not bear any upfront costs.
Jail authorities said that the entire investment will be made by Mover Solar and Renewable Energy Ltd, under an agreement allowing the private company to recover costs through power supply and grid contributions.
