Dhaka University authorities on Wednesday said that three more individuals were arrested at the night following Tuesday in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo.
The university authorities revealed the information in a press release issued by the university’s public relations office.
A section of students from the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University, where Shahriar studied, at a press conference on Wednesday threatened to hold a march towards the home ministry on Thursday if there was no visible progress in probing the murder case.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in a press release, announced that it would hold a sit-in programme at Shahbagh crossing and in front of the InterContinental Dhaka between 10:00am and 5:00pm on Thursday demanding justice for Shahriar.
Shahriar, also a leader of the DU unit of JCD, died in an attack by miscreants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in Dhaka.
On May 14, the police arrested three ‘outsiders’ for their suspected involvement in the murder.
The DU press release said that Shahriar’s father Md Fakhrul Alam in a meeting with DU vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan at the latter’s office had conveyed the family’s satisfaction with the series of measures and overall cooperation extended by the university in the investigation and legal proceedings concerning his death.
Treasurer professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, and Shahriar’s three brothers SAM Amirul Islam, SAM Shariful Alam, and SAM Shahidul Alam also attended the meeting.
The JCD on Tuesday kept the capital’s Shahbagh crossing blocked for about two hours.
The area witnessed huge traffic congestion and caused immense suffering to the people.
On May 18, JCD blocked the Shahbagh crossing for the same reason.
