The Dhanmondi police released three that they detained on an undertaking by the National Citizen Party’s senior joint chief organiser Abdul Hannan Masud early Tuesday.
The trio was released three hours after the police had detained them for pressing the police for arresting a book publisher who was not wanted in any case.
The detainees also misbehaved with the police while pressing for the arrest of the publisher, Md Golam Mostofa, when police went to address a National Emergency Service 999 call alleging that 15 to 20 people had been trying to enter the caller’s house on Road-4 in the capital’s Dhanmondi area, according to the police.
Dhanmondi police station officer-in-charge Kya Swee Nue said that when they reached the spot, the three individuals introduced themselves as the leaders of the Student Against Discrimination and pressed the police to arrest the publisher claiming that he had links with the ousted Awami League.
‘We did not arrest the publisher as he was not named in any case. We cannot arrest such a person. We released the three as NCP leader Abdul Hannan Masud gave an undertaking for their release,’ the OC said.
He said that they handed the three over to their family members.
A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed that the youths had been pressing the police and misbehaving with the Dhanmondi police station officer-in-charge to arrest the publisher.
NCP leader Abdul Hannan Masud could not be reached for comments as he did not respond to calls over the phone.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a press release in the evening said that it would not tolerate any incident of taking law in hand.
The detainees were released at about 3:30am on Tuesday after discussing with high officials concerned as they made a commitment that they would not involve themselves in such incidents in the future, the release said.
NCP leader Abdul Hannan Masud is also a coordinator of the Student Against Discrimination, the platform that led the student-led mass uprising that ousted the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5, 2024.
