A Bangladeshi youth was injured as the Border Security Force of India opened fire targeting him along the border at the Rajapara bordering point under Bishwambharpur upazila in Sunamganj Monday morning.
The victim is Md Shamsul Haque, 25, of Rajapara village under Bishwambharpur upazila, Border Guard Bangladesh officials said.
Local people said that several youths, including Shamsul, entered Indian territory at around 6:00am through the Rajapara bordering point allegedly to bring Indian goods.
No sooner had they entered the Indian territory, members of the BSF opened fire targeting them and a bullet hit Shamsul that left him seriously injured, they said.
Later, Shamsul’s companions rescued him, returned to the Bangladesh territory, and admitted him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for treatment, they said.
BGB 28 Battalion commanding officer AKM Zakaria told journalists that the youth injured in the BSF firing was involved in smuggling.
‘There was an allegation that they went to bring goods illegally from India by evading the eyes of the BGB. A process is underway to take legal action against them,’ he said.
