A section of the students of the Kabi Nazrul Govt College on Monday laid siege to the office of the deputy commissioner of Dhaka Tanvir Ahmed for around two hours to press home seven-point demand, including renovation of dormitories and solutions to transport crisis.

They threatened to bring Old Dhaka to a standstill if their demands were not met within seven days.


During their protest, a huge traffic gridlock was created in the adjacent areas causing huge suffering of the people.

Later, they withdrew their siege after the DC urged them to formally send their demands to his office and ensured to consider some of their demands, as per the college authorities and student representatives.

The DC Tanvir Ahmed could not be reached over the phone after repeated attempts.

Earlier on the day, around 300 students under the banner of Shadharon Shikkharthi surrounded the Dhaka DC Office at around 11:30am.

Later, a representative delegation entered the DC office to formally present their demands, while others continued the siege outside.

Their demands are - renovation of student dormitories and construction of new halls at alternative locations, separate dormitory facilities for male and female students, establishment of a reliable transport system, including an adequate number of buses, construction of multi-storied academic buildings to address severe classroom shortages, allocation of new land for campus expansion, demolition of hazardous buildings and development of new infrastructure and addressing the shortage of faculties immediately.

Jamal Uddin, joint convener of the college鈥檚 JCD, said that despite repeated appeals their demands were not met which compelled them to take firm action.

He also said that the DC asked them to send him the demands formally through the college authorities.

After they met the DC, they left the office at around 1:30pm.

The college principal Professor Muhammad Habibur Rahman told 抖阴精品 on Monday night that they would assist the students to press home their rational demands.

The DC also assured the students to meet their demands as much as possible, he said quoting the students.

The protest follows a prior demonstration held on May 7.
