Students of Jahangirnagar University on Thursday formed a human chain, demanding reforms to the university’s dependent quota in the admission process.
Under the banner of ‘Gono Abhuthan Rokkha Andolon’, the students gathered in front of the JU administrative building at noon, pressing for four key demands.
The demands are abolition of the vice-chancellor quota, logical reform of the dependent quota, implementation of a unified question paper system, and reduction of application fees for entrance exams.
The university administration recently announced the cancellation of the quota for grandchildren of freedom fighters, but the protesters expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of an official notification to this effect.
Shoaib Hasan, a student of the urban and regional planning department, stressed that the dependent quota should benefit only those genuinely in need.
He proposed introducing a minimum cut-off mark and excluding candidates from privileged backgrounds, such as families of ninth-grade government officers or higher.
The protesting students vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.
At present, approximately 11 per cent of the 1,850 annual admissions at JU are allocated through various quotas, including the dependent quota for university employees’ children, the vice-chancellor’s quota, and other reserved categories.
